Disclaimer: This is a rewrite of one of Red Rover's entries which is technically not a lemon, but an analytical look at the identity of Digimon. Red Rover dedicated his edition, Digimon Sex and Relations, to the author Dark Jester who had done something similar with Pokémon.

This essay, though written from largely the same perspective, includes samples of such behavior and provides examples and references to back up these quotes. This is written in a potential future in which Mr. Jou Kido, a medical student at Tokyo University, has access to all of the incarnations of the Digital World we know of by way of the Trailmon "Swift" who can cross dimensions freely. This allows Jou and his fellow researcher, Koushirou, to cite evidence from outside of their own dimension.

Though the essay is fully copyrighted to New Gaea Entertainment, it may be reproduced in full with no modifications, except the inclusion of images to illustrate the points, on any Digimon fan-site so long as this disclaimer remains fully intact.

This essay is dedicated to every Digimon Fan-author, but most specifically to Lord Archive, Red Rover, and Wisemon. I publish this in the hope that it will become a cornerstone in the study of Digimon as living creatures who interact as deeply as humans.

Digimon Relationships and Sexuality

Since discovering a dimension which parallels our own, many people involved in the scientific, religious, and teaching fields have been faced with conflict over several issues. Many of these conflicts are abstract, such as whether or not God exists, or among those who do not debate this, whether or not their God wants them to send missionaries to the Digimon. Some are more concrete, and potentially applicable to life in the future, such as the conversion of matter and energy. However the greatest debate comes over the fact that this dimension has inhabitants which seem to be very much intelligent creatures.

Are the inhabitants of this world, known as Digimon, intelligent? If so are they in fact 'sentient'? Are they equal to humans, or are they simply talking animals? This debate ranges from religious to biological to metaphysical, but the research gathered is generally conclusive on the fact. Digimon are truly alive in the biological sense of the term: they eat and produce waste, they consume resources, and they grow, they learn, and they respond to external stimuli. Biologically, even though we are unable to dissect them and see their internal organs, Digimon are indeed alive.

Many will argue from religious and metaphysical points of view that the biological argument proves that yes, Digimon are alive, but they are not sentient. They claim that Digimon are unable to think or feel, because they are merely the composite of Energy and Data, not true living creatures of physical matter. They find support for this in the fact that their religious texts never mention Digimon in any context, and therefore they are simply a byproduct of the rise of the information age.[1]

This essay will debate that here, but it is not the focus of the author to prove or disprove their sentience. The author himself has seen Digimon act in a selfless manner, several taking deadly attacks in order to save friends, human and Digimon alike.[2] Those Digimon friends have been seen mourning the loss of this friend as deeply as the human friends, crying tears as they watched their friend die and making a monument to honor the death[3], even though all Digimon know that any Digimon who dies in simply reformatted, to come back to life again[4]. The author has met people who have seen Digimon asking out other Digimon as nervously as a young man in high school asking a girl for his first date. Almost anybody who has met a Digimon will report that they laugh when they find a joke humorous, will cry when in pain, and many will even say that Digimon blush in embarrassment. If Digimon then do not have souls, perhaps neither do humans, if these criteria are not a sufficient way to judge for the presence. Unfortunately, no branch of science or religion has bee able to provide a test to prove the existence of a soul, so this essay will henceforth ignore the question of sentience or a soul being present in Digimon.

The reason we will ignore the soul is that this essay is not a philosophical one, but rather a biological one, pertaining to the simplest of biological functions necessary for any thing we know to be considered 'alive' in a biological sense. All creatures we know on earth, be they plant, animal or other, are driven to reproduce, whether in a sexual or asexual manner. Many rumors have arisen claiming that Digimon do not have sex or gender -- that they do not, in fact, reproduce. The author has heavily researched this subject in a wide variety of conditions and with a wide variety of people exposed to Digimon. In fact, many thanks go to those Digimon and people who have answered questions about the topic for the purposes of this essay.

DIGIMON BIOLOGY

There is a common myth in the scientific and civilian populations that Digimon have no concept of sex and no physical gender.[5] This has further led rise to the widespread misconception that Digimon also have no gender roles.[6] This is a flawed belief that arises from flawed scientific analysis, based on the principle of noninterference. Any scientific study is a source of interference, so why, then, should we limit what sorts of interference are allowed?

My research has turned up a few of the sources for this misconception, which I shall point out immediately. The first is that most Digimon have no clothes -- they appear only in their natural raiment of feathers, fur, scales, or other coverings that their ecology has dictated most appropriate. In spite of this, the physical studies largely conducted through photographs or video have shown no evidence of any genitalia, either masculine or feminine, on any Digimon.[7] What they have shown, however, is that many Digimon, roughly seventy percent of them in fact, have a fatty pouch near their legs which tends to blend seamlessly with their skin. As I have pointed out, none of the normal researchers has thought to examine or question what is inside of this pouch, and so, during the course of my own research, I asked a large number of Digimon with pouches about this. A full half of all those whom I asked responded by closing their eyes, stroking, and allowing their penile mass to emerge. They then explained that this was their means of reproduction, which was concealed for protection. This is biologically plausible as an evolved trait, because those who did not have a protected penis might lose it in combat with another Digimon, and thus the gene for a revealed penis would have disappeared over time as only those with protected ones survived to produce offspring.

In fact, these male Digimon had, in ninety percent of the cases involved, a penis very similar in structure to a human. The few exceptions tended to be insectoid species, such as Tentomon, or otherwise 'isolated' species, such as the amphibious Betamon or the plant-like Alraumon and Floramon, of which both male and females have been found. Indeed, most species do possess male and female genders. How then, is it that we have failed to notice female Digimon apart from males?

It is simple, actually. Females, rather than using a fatty pouch to hide their genitalia, simply close it. Eighty percent of all known female Digimon have willingly demonstrated that when they begin to get aroused, whether by the pressure of stroking around their vaginal regions or in other ways, the vaginal opening simply rolls out from within the skin. Most take only a mild level of arousal for this to happen, such as hearing a description of a penis or smelling the sexual pheromones of a far-off potential mate. Of course, some female Digimon have natural coverings, such as fur or feathers, and so their vaginal opening is exposed and not hidden away.

The reasoning behind this concealment is wholly uncertain, but it is largely useless among Digimon for concealing gender, since the same way humans can easily tell even prepubescent males from females of similar age, Digimon can do the same with other Digimon, even if the species in question look very different. This is also not present among the most humanoid Digimon, the ones who wear clothing.

In fact, when asked about it by my fellow researcher, an Angemon and Angewomon simply shrugged, removed their clothing, and showed us that there was no concealment of their genitalia aside from the clothes. As they were in each other's presence at the time, they proceeded to demonstrate what we had already suspected, though that will be covered in more detail below. In fact, After the display, Angemon proceed to explain that most Digimon who had armor or clothing in the appropriate areas simply tended not to have the concealment which so many 'uncovered' species had developed, though a few had retained it as a sort of tribute to their evolution, such as the rare examples of Bastemon or Valkyrimon.

Also valuable for the pursuit of knowledge is that the higher the 'level' of a Digimon, the more likely it is to have a 'fixed' gender related solely to its form. While Child and Adult level Digimon often have a seven to three (7:3) or one to one (1:1) ratio of males to female (or vice versa), Complete level Digimon tend to be more largely locked into four to one (4:1), five to one (5:1), or even one to zero (1:0) ratios of male to female or vice versa. Andromon and Angewomon are good examples of the last, as there is no such thing as a female Andromon, just as there are no male Angewomon. Of course, a small few lower level Digimon, such as Lucemon and Angemon, also have fixed genders. At the final level, be it the sixth or higher, Digimon are almost exclusively in nine to one (9:1), ten to one (10:1), or one to zero (1:0) gender ratios.

A rare side-effect of these 'locked genders' is the fact that many Digimon can go through a process my co-researcher called 'gender swapping', whereby when they evolve their gender may change, and it may, about ten percent of the time, remain that way when they revert to a previous form, if they ever revert. Genders may also swap during the reformatting of a Digimon when it dies, but this is usually less noticeable than during evolution. When questioned on it, several Floramon who are known to gender swap from female to male when they become Kiwimon responded: "It is not confusing for us, the evolution affects our whole body, and we have full knowledge of it. We do not feel as though we lose anything by losing maleness when we devolve. Also, we don't feel special about being able to experience life as both males and females."

The most unique part of Digimon biology is what is known as 'the third', a Digimon which is unable to reproduce on its own. Only one species is know to produce 'thirds', and that species is a true isolate from all others known as Culumon. There are, in the known realm of Digital worlds, only about a Dozen Culumon in existence -- we do not know how or if they evolve, only that in spite of being a Baby form they provide the possibility for new forms of Digimon to come into existence and are partly responsible for gender swapping.

Lastly, though it is exceptionally rare, sometimes a Digimon, whether as a result of "gender swapping" or by a mutation of it's data, or simply through a natural means, will be a hermaphrodite, showing the traits of both genders while not being a third. Such Digimon are, typically, only able to reproduce with one of their sets of genitalia, thouh both are sexually usable.

Digimon do, then, have sexual identities and sexual organs. The logical conclusion from this is that quite obviously they have sexual reproduction, which is quite an accurate conclusion, as has been observed by numerous unintentional observers.

DIGIMON REPRODUCTION

A second myth, stemming directly from the first, is that Digimon do not have sex. After all, without sexes, how can they have sexual intercourse? However, as the research has shown, Digimon do indeed have sexes. In fact, unlike humans who only have two, Digimon also have a third which is both hermaphroditic and asexual, and simply allows a different form of reproduction among sexually capable Digimon.

Digimon are capable of being aroused from the time they first evolve to their Child, or "level three", form, which is, in fact, equivalent to the pubescent phase of human development. Not all Child forms are able to reproduce while aroused, but many are able to reproduce immediately upon reaching this level of development. Species known unable to produce young at this level include Protmon, Pico Devimon, and Demi Zeirickmon.

Males and females out of any Digimon species can produce young with those of any other species, because Digimon do not follow the established human science of genetics, but rather they simply produce a new digi-egg which could be for any species of Digimon. It is, however, most likely that the produced digi-egg will be the same species as the parents if they are of the same species -- so that when two Agumon have sex, they are likely to produce an egg with a Botamon which is likely to evolve into anothher Koromon and then Agumon. This relationship of coincidence, however, ends at the child level, so that if an Angewomon and Holy Angemon, each evolved from an Angemon which came from a Patamon, were to reproduce, it would only be most likely to produce a new Poyomon which would become Tokomon and then Patamon, with no higher chance of it becoming an Angemon than if a Kentarumon evolved from Patamon had reproduced with the same Angewomon.

If, however, a male Gazimon and a female Gomamon decided to produce a digi-egg, there would be no telling what would result from the egg. It is also well known that some digi-eggs do not hatch Level One Digimon -- in my research I have seen fully developed Patamon, Labramon, Kenmon, and even on one occassion a fully developed Tailmon[8] hatch directly from digi-eggs. It is very rare for Digimon to remain in their digi-egg until reaching even the second level, though -- even rarer still in most realms for them to reach the third level of development. However at some times this is a function of their residual power -- it has been reported that three final level Digimon each were reverted to the digi-egg state by being defeated and all three hatched at the third level in their development, rather than as a simple baby.

In order to reproduce, however, Digimon must have two parties, or else die (which I will address in a later section of this essay). The two parties may not be of the same gender, though any combination of genders can produce a digi-egg. Thirds may reproduce with males or females, or even, in theory, with other thirds, in the event that a pair of "thirds" should meet. Now then, Digimon cannot reproduce with humans, because of the sheer difference in their structure. This would seem quite obvious, and in the "real" or "human" world, it almost always holds true.

In the Digital World, however, humans are not composed of DNA, but of data, the same as any Digimon. This has allowed some groups of children to fuse with their Digimon partners, and allowed some humans to evolve into Digimon.[9] This seems to so clearly defy what we wish to accept by considering Digimon as a separate species that it makes it immediately obvious that it is, at least in theory, possible for humans and Digimon to produce offspring, though the lack of seeing such offspring gives us no sign as to whether or not they will be viable life or not.

As a matter of fact, due to the interference of a third, a Renamon in one dimension is pregnant with the child of a human, and may, as I write this, have given birth already.[10] This will be the first recorded time that a hybrid child of human and Digimon has been born, and it opens the door to a new realm of study in the interactions of humans and Digimon. Will this hybrid grow at the pace of a human or a Digimon? Will it be sexually viable, and if so, with humans, Digimon, or both? Would the same thing be possible for a human female with a male Digimon?

Concerning reproduction, there are two types of gestation among Digimon. The first is spontaneous creation, in which a digi-egg is created during a successful sexual encounter. This digi-egg will then gestate for a short time before hatching, usually in the time frame of one week to one month after being formed. This is the same type of development as when a powerful Digimon is deleted and the remaining data gathers into a digi-egg.

The second, and far less common, type of reproduction is akin to mammalian pregnancy, in which the young actually develops within the mother's body. Though Digimon females do not actually have a placenta, their data structure is altered in a way when they become pregnant. It has been compared to "object-oriented programming" by those who understand the structuring of computer data and programing far better than myself. The mother Digimon literally becomes a container for the baby, which is often born at a higher level than those hatched through spontaneous creation of digi-eggs. This type of gestation typically takes four weeks, though it fluctuates from two weeks upwards to eight weeks. A pregnant Digimon will tend to show similar symptoms to those of a pregnant human, including morning sickness and a strange appetite.

There is also a specific group of Digimon who are flagged as "Hybrids", and are the result of a Digital 'spirit' fusing with a digital body, be it human or Digimon.[11] Little is known of the sexual nature or viability of these 'Hybrid Digimon', though there will likely be a further paper from me dealing specifically with them, at a later date.

Newborn Digimon have no need of parental figures, as they already have the basic knowledge and skills necessary to live their lives and communicate with each other from birth.[12]

DIGIMON SEXUALITY

Approximately 85% of all Digimon are bisexual, 10% are strictly heterosexual, and 5% are strictly homosexual. Of those who are bisexual, half prefer homosexual relations, saying that they are "more fun" to engage in. Half of the remnant prefer heterosexual relationships, many saying that they feel more natural to them. The remaining bisexual Digimon either said they had never thought of which they might prefer, or just liked having sex with anyone they wanted, truly showing no preference to either gender.

In fact, far more prevalent than a sexual preference among Digimon is a species preference. Many Digimon are drawn to particular species for various reasons, be it their power, figure, or simply a curiosity in them about that species. This, coupled with a wide variety of fetishes, is the flavor of Digimon sexuality. In fact, because there are no taboos among Digimon, almost anything that can be imagined is fair game when it comes to sex. Among those interviewed, some common interests were: Furry Digimon, Tails, Humanoid Digimon among "Beast" types (and vice versa), Plant-type Digimon (particularly among reptilian and amphibious Digimon), Tentacled Digimon (particularly among females) and Angel or Devil type Digimon. Fetishes based on the Attribute of a Digimon are particularly prevalent, as are those based on the form. To Digimon these are little different than fetishes for a particular hair color or ethnicity, both of which are quite common among humans.

More typical types of fetishes are also prevalent, including almost every shade of BDSM, voyeurism, roleplaying, excretory and food-based fetishes, breasts, feet, and any other human fetish you can imagine is probably expressed within the populace of the Digital World. Some Digimon have fetishes which are related to their abilities and powers -- as an example, vampiric Digimon have a taste for behaving like the normal vampires of stories, both in their daily life and in their sexual conduct.

Angemon and Angewomon demonstrated for us the power of their sexuality by bringing in a viral Coyotemon. This Coyotemon proceeded to have intercourse with Angewomon and left after he was finished and we had asked several questions. He told us that he had a thing for vaccine and humanoid Digimon, and the he would have also enjoyed being tied up and whipped by her. Angemon then proceeded to have his turn, and demonstrated the further sensitive points and erogenous zones of his partner's body. The variety of sexuality aomong Digimon, and the variety of ways to take advanatge of it, seems to be only limited by the number of species of Digimon that exist.

Mr. Izumi and I thiank you for reading this essay, and hope you will take this knowledge into consideration in the future. Digimon are living, sexual beings who enjoy sex at least as much as many humans seem to. To them it is a part of life, alongside of eating and fighting, and it adds spice, even between individuals of the same species.

This report will be followed by a later report concerning the biology of Digimon, as well as an update reporting on the so-called Hybrid digimon. Thank you again for your time.
