That's his tail. You can see it when he flys.

That's not a tail! Why would he need a tail? He's an insect! they don't need a tail to balance while flying! this is what we writers like to call a "plot device"

To be fair, it's not really a tail, so much as it is an extension of the abdomen. By the definition of a tail as an extension of the vertebrae, insects can't have tails.
